Excerpt from Picturing Kindness
In Caleb’s classroom, an important book sits on the windowsill. Ms. Ruby is making it herself. When she sees children being kind, she snaps a photo for the book. Everyone wants to see themselves on a page.
Everyone, that is, except Caleb. He’s too busy keeping track of his shadow as it leaps on the wall and shrinks beneath his feet.
When Caleb’s shadow suddenly disappears, Caleb searches under every sandbox pail. He looks so hard that he doesn’t notice Lucy crying nearby.
But Harry does. He hurries to sit next to Lucy until she feels better.
“That’s what kindness looks like!” Ms. Ruby realizes. She grabs her phone to take a picture. CLICK!
The next day when the whole class gathers, they see Harry and Lucy on a new page in the book.
Caleb hardly notices.
